Helping a Child with Sensitive Teeth

A young boy suffering from severe sensitive teeth.
While most people do not suffer from sensitive teeth until they are adults, it can happen to children, too. If your child says that their teeth hurt when doing things like eating sweet treats, drinking hot beverages, or eating ice cream, it may be due to tooth sensitivity. The first thing a parent should do is seek out the advice of your child's dentist to determine the cause, then you can figure out how to make it better.

Options for Treating Sensitive Teeth in Children

Usually, the first type of treatment for a child with sensitive teeth is to get a fluoride treatment on their teeth. This can help strengthen the enamel, plus help them feel better very quickly.

Another thing to do is to get sealants on the back teeth of your child as this can block out some of the sensitivity. Making sure that there are no cavities is another option your child's dentist has, because cavities can cause a lot of pain when eating or drinking things.

If none of these help your child, then your child's dentist is going to have to do some further testing to determine what method will best help your child. While that testing is going on, make sure to avoid whatever food causes pain for your child. Do your best to keep your child's diet healthy and avoid anything that has an extreme temperature (either hot or cold).

Also, make sure your child knows to brush as soon as he or she is done eating, as the food sitting up against your child's teeth and gums can cause the issue to get worse.

Even though sensitivity is rarer in children, it does happen, so know how to help your child. Make sure you do not change your child's toothpaste unless their dentist tells them to do so, as some are just not safe for kids to use.

Please contact us if you have any questions about your child's sensitive teeth.
