How to Choose the Right Toothpaste for Your Toddler

Posted on 5/10/2016 by Cynthia Pelley
A young boy brushing his teeth with kid friendly toothpaste.Once your child's teeth come in, he'll reach an important milestone in life where he needs to start brushing.

This means that you'll need to invest in a child-sized toothbrush and some toothpaste, but what type of toothpaste is right for your little one? Use these tips to find the best option.

Find a Kid-Friendly Flavored Toothpaste

One of the best ways to get your child to brush his teeth is to choose a kid-friendly flavor. Sweet flavors like watermelon or strawberry are great options, but you might want to try a few to see which your child likes the best. Kids can be extremely picky, so be prepared to invest in a variety of different options before you find one that your child is okay with using.

Look for Fluoride

Fluoride is crucial for growing teeth, and it helps to prevent tooth decay. Once your toddler is able to spit out the toothpaste, you should choose an option that contains fluoride, but make sure that he is brushing under your watchful eye.

You Only Need a Small Amount
When buying toothpaste for your toddler, you don't need to buy an enormous tube. Children of this age don't need much toothpaste due to the small size of their teeth, so you only need about a pea-sized amount for each brushing.

Check the Labels
When choosing a toothpaste, make sure that you are reading the labels to verify that any option is approved by the ADA. It should also indicate that the toothpaste is safe for kids under the age of two, as this will be the best option for kids who are just starting to care for their teeth.

Remember that your child should be visiting the dentist before his first birthday. So please, contact our office before this date and ask about what type of toothpaste is right for him and when he should start brushing with it.
