When you are expecting, there are many things to prepare for as you grow the little of bundle of joy, but no matter how busy you are, it is a good idea to continue to take care of your smile. Here are some of the reasons why your oral health is still so important while you are pregnant.
Periodontal DiseaseCare of your teeth has been linked to birth challenges. Periodontal disease has been linked to pre-eclampsia in some women, which can cause early deliveries. Many dental insurance plans allow for additional cleanings, which we encourage you to take advantage of.
Bacteria from the MouthBacteria that stays inside the mouth during pregnancy can cause significant health issues for both you and your baby. The inflammation that could result from this bacteria can at times cause premature delivery before 37 weeks gestation or delivering a baby with a low birth weight, which can pose serious risks for the child. Talk to your family dentist about ways to minimize bacteria and stay healthy.
Production of ProgesteroneWhile you are pregnant, your body is at an increased risk of inflamed gums and other oral health issues. When progesterone is released it can cause additional inflammation in the gum tissues. Taking proper care of your teeth and visiting your family dentist can help to ensure that your gums stay healthy and that oral health issues stay at a minimum to ensure the health of you and your baby.
