Tips To Keep Kids Teeth Healthy After Halloween
|
Halloween is a lot of fun for kids, but it can wreak havoc on their teeth. Rather than putting a damper on the fun, there are simple ways to help your child keep his teeth healthy this holiday:
• |
Avoid sticky candy - Any type of food that hangs out in your mouth longer than the time that it takes to chew it puts the teeth at risk for decay. Inspect your child's candy before he consumes any and remove any sticky, chewy candies, such as caramel, fruit snacks, taffy and gummies. |
• |
Avoid hard candies and lollipops - Lollipops and hard candies are enticing for kids because of their fun, bright colors, but they are really bad for their teeth because of the length of time that the sugar resides in the mouth. It is best to skip them altogether. |
• |
Eat candy with a meal - It is really tempting for kids to snack on their candy as they go from house to house, but this is a really bad habit for their teeth. When candy is consumed alongside a meal, the saliva production is greater, which allows the sugar to be washed down rather than left on your child's teeth. |
• |
Drink with candy - Along with eating a meal before having candy, your child should drink water in order to encourage the sugar to be washed away from his teeth. Avoid giving him sugar, pop or any other drink that contains sugar and will make matters worse. |
• |
Brush your child's teeth more - This goes without saying, but brush your child's teeth a few more times on Halloween to make up for the treats that he consumes, to fight the risk of excessive decay. |
