What Type of Dental Care Should Infants Have?

Posted on 2/20/2017 by Cynthia Pelley
A mother brushing her baby’s teeth.
When your child is only an infant, do you need to take them to the dentist? The short answer is yes. Your infant needs to see the dentist for a wide variety of reasons.

If your infant has not yet seen the dentist and is at least one year old, then you should make an appointment to see a pediatric dentist right away.

It is a good idea to start off the relationship with your child's dentist early, so your child grows up knowing that the dentist is an important part of their health care.

Why Your Infant Needs to See the Dentist

Your infant should go to the dentist for the first time somewhere between six months and one year old. The dentist won't do much during the first visit, but it is still an important visit to make sure you go to. Your child's dentist is going to want to take a look around your infant's mouth and look to see how the current development is going.

They will want to make sure everything is clean, and make sure there are no signs of early tooth decay in any of your child's baby teeth. Plus, they will want to track the eruption of teeth and the location of the teeth to ensure your child's mouth is developed fully.

Plus, your child's dentist is going to want to start building up that good rapport with your child as soon as possible. If your child enjoys going to the dentist now, it will be easier to continue to do as they get older and their oral issues grow in complexity.

Contact our office today and schedule the initial visit between your infant and his or her dentist as soon as the office has an opening to get your child in.
