What Happens the First Time Your Child Sees the Dentist

Normally, somewhere between six and 12 months of age, your child should see the dentist for the first time.

This won't be a complicated visit, but it is an important visit. They are going to want to see your child, speak with them, and look around their mouth a little bit.

This can be a great time to let your child get to know his or her dentist, and it can also be a good time to start forming healthy oral habits. Here are a few things to expect during that initial visit.

During Your Child's First Visit to The Dentist

When you bring your infant to the dentist for the very first time, it will be more of an introduction than anything else. Your dentist will want to say hello to your little one, and let him or her know that they will be caring for your child's mouth and teeth. They are going to explain their role in helping your child get strong and healthy teeth, and they will want to answer any questions that your child may have at that tender age.

If your child is willing, the dentist will also want to take a peek inside their mouth to see if the teeth are coming in the way that they should. Some children are resistant to this, so it won't be pushed if your child is nervous.

Once that initial visit is done, your child will come back every 3-6 months for regular, routine exams and a cleaning as enough teeth erupt. The main point of that initial contact is to slowly introduce your child to being cared for by someone other than the parents and the doctor they are used to seeing.
