How to Prepare Your Child with Autism for a Trip to the Dentist

Posted on 6/20/2016 by Cynthia Pelley
A collection of letters pinned to a cork board spelling out autism.A trip to the dentist can be a challenge for any child, but when your child has a special need like autism, unique challenges can arise.

Pediatric dentists are experienced at working with children with special needs, but as a parent, there are also things that you can do to make the process easier.

Get Your Child Used to Having His Teeth Brushed

Prior to your dental office visit, it may be in your best interest to get your child used to having someone else brush his teeth for him.

You can also use tools similar to those that your child's dentist might utilize, including a vibrating toothbrush or a dental mirror. These activities will help to expose your child to what his visit to the dentist will actually be like.

Read a Book Together
Another effective strategy is to read an age appropriate book about dental visits with your child. It is recommended that you do this several times before your appointment in order to better familiarize your child with the process.

You will know your child better than anyone, so you will have a good idea about the activities that are likely to be the most concerning.

Provide an Incentive
Offering your child motivation or an incentive for good behavior might also make your appointment go more smoothly. You might want to create a prize basket filled with some of your child's favorite toys and treats.

Talk to your child ahead of time to let him know that after his appointment, he will get his special reward.

The most important thing that you can do to make your child with autism's appointment go smoothly is to contact us.

By discussing your child's needs with us, we can make sure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to helping him be as comfortable as possible.
