Your Child's First Dental Visit and Cleaning

Posted on 1/23/2016 by Cynthia Pelley
A little girl enjoying her visit at the dentist for the first time!Though tooth eruption varies from child to child, most children will begin to get their teeth in between the age of 6 and 9 months. However, it is not unheard of for a 12 month old to have just a few teeth. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that all children visit their dentist around the age of one.

This visit will not consist of a dental cleaning, but rather a brief assessment of how your child's teeth are coming in and further you will be able to address any concerns or questions that you may have with regards to your child's dental health. It is also recommended by the AAPD that your child receive his or her first cleaning by the age of 3.

Dental Visits before Age 3

A visit to the dentist prior to age 3, or near, will serve as an inspection and Q & A session. Also, this is a time to help familiarize your child with the dentist. To help them to build confidence about the practice and further trust in the staff. Increasing your child's awareness prior to their first cleaning will prove to be beneficial in that they will feel more confident in their surroundings come their first cleaning.

During this visit, the hygienist will review with you common oral topics such as diet, tooth eruption and future cleaning schedules. They will also review with you helpful ways to prevent early childhood cavities, or tooth decay.

Your Child's First Dental Cleaning

During your child's first cleaning you can expect that they will be walked through the whole process as their teeth are cleaned, flossed and they receive a fluoride application. The dental hygienist will also thoroughly review with your child proper oral health practices as he or she will typically demonstrate these methods for added clarification.

After the cleaning, the pediatric dentist will give your child's mouth a thorough exam at which point they will address any concerns they may have.

Please contact us if you have any questions about your child's first dental visit.
